Age and Onset: Natural, Early, and Premature Menopause

While menopause occurring between the ages of 45 and 55 is considered “natural,” it can happen earlier for some individuals. Menopause that occurs between the ages of 40 and 45 is defined as early menopause. When menopause happens at age 40 or younger, it is classified as premature menopause, a condition that affects approximately 1 in 100 women. Premature menopause can be caused by genetic factors, autoimmune disorders, or as a consequence of medical interventions such as the surgical removal of the ovaries (oophorectomy) or damage from treatments like chemotherapy. An earlier onset of menopause is linked to a higher risk for certain health conditions like osteoporosis and heart disease, making awareness and a thorough discussion with a healthcare provider crucial.
